Adaptive IT Portfolio Manager (ITPM) is a web-based application for the management and reuse of enterprise software assets in the context of the business. It provides an extensible platform for the management of any enterprise asset and out-of-the-box support for the common IT assets. ITPM lets you capture your IT portfolio to provide a view of the inter-dependencies among projects, applications, interfaces, data, infrastructure and your business processes, products and organization structure.

The performance improvements and benefits that can be realized through ITPM include:

  • Reduced costs due to minimizing application and data redundancy, streamlining software component management and maintenance and rationalizing hardware, software and network of infrastructure
  • Increased efficiency and productivity: designers and developers having timely access to the accurate, up-to-date information about applications, components and data assets, where email alerts can be triggered to specific users when updates take place and surveys can be maintained on the IT artifacts to evaluate and monitor change initiatives
  • Better, more informed decision-making: complete IT architecture design decision support enabled by the ability to perform impact analysis on projects, processes, applications, and data
  • Support for mergers and outsourcing, through the creation of future planning views, allowing participants to evolve the vision of the future organization whilst working on the current assessments and decisions
  • Planning future IT Architecture in line with business, by planning ahead for hardware, infrastructure and application evolution. ITPM also allows the IT changes to be synchronized with the business changes and enables organizations to construct hypothetical future views to investigate the impact of business change
  • Assessing and managing business exposure to IT risk, allowing the operational risk at the hardware level (e.g. a server going out of service) to be reflected up at the business level (which processes and which users would be affected)
  • Tracing, rationalizing and protecting data and information flows. ITPM’s powerful view mechanism allows aggregated visualization of the lineage of data throughout an enterprise in either direction: this ensures the integrity and quality of data.

By documenting, managing and understanding its IT portfolio, an organization can achieve faster time-to-market, track changes to its portfolio and determine the impact of such changes throughout the business. This supports change initiatives to reduce costs, improve efficiency, respond faster to opportunities and threats and to leverage the value of finite resources and budgets by ensuring that programs and projects align with the business.

"The ability to manage IT as a business may sound idealistic to the many enterprises that can barely manage individual projects, let alone entire programs or IT itself. But it is possible; there are mature approaches to doing it, and even tools to support such efforts."
